Colorfabb 3Dprinter filaments

3Design New Zealand have taken on a new product range of specialty filaments from Colorfabb. Colorfabb are industry leaders specialising in the field of additives and masterbatches for the plastic industry. Colorfabb have one of the best reputations in the industry for developing high quality 3d printing filament. There specialty range of 3Dprinting filaments give us the ability to 3d print with various materials on our desktop 3d printers. 3Design have been getting Many requests by 3Dprinter users for composite materials, so we sourced the best by colorfabb and now stock these materials, woodFill , bambooFill, bronzeFill , brassFill ,copperFill.

BRASSFILL

The material is still in beta, which means we’re still working on the formulation to get the best possible performance. Our current formulation is providing excellent results on 1.75mm direct drive printers, such as the Makerbot Replicator 2 and Prusa I3. The filament is slightly softer then bronzeFill and copperFill, users need to be careful with applying pressure onto the filament. We’ve found that 3D printers using a bowden tube set-up and 2.85mm filament gives the least reliable results. Users need to take extra care of not over stressing the filament, with pressure and retraction settings.

Like copperFill and bronzeFill the brassFill filament can be post processed. A unique quality of brassFill is the lovely golden shine it shows when polished to perfection
COPPERFILL

3D printing with metal on your own desktop 3D printer! This amazing one of a kind filament will allow you to print with actual copper at home.

*Experimental Material

*Testing showed reliable results using the all metal hot-ends, such as the E3D and the Makerbot Replicator 2 hotend. Hotends which use a teflon isolator coupler can generate adhesion to the copper filament possibly leading to clogs and is there for not recommended for novice users yet.

If you’re looking for something special in your filament portfolio then consider our woodFill filament. About 70% colorfabb PLA and 30% recycled woodfibres.

If you’re looking for something special in your filament portfolio then consider our bambooFill filament. About 80% colorfabb PLA and 20% recycled bamboofibres.

colorFabb is a young 3D printing plastic material manufacturer. The parent company, Helian Polymers, has been working with bio-plastic processing and colour mixing since 2011. The main focus of colorFabb is to provide plastic for the booming home/maker/business 3D printing industry.

Many people would link colorFabb and 3D printer manufacturer Ultimaker together — from observation they seem to go hand-in-hand but as far as I can tell this is historic and really only indicates that a need for high-quality filament was driven by the demand for high-quality 3D printers. When much of the 3D printing world was struggling with low quality product, some companies decided to actually manufacture product themselves rather than re-sell other materials they could not control.

3Design and flightless Collect & Connect

Late last year 3Design had the privilege of working with a an awsome company called Flightless.Flightless is a boutique design and independent games development studio for a Concept, design, and production of a multi-user interactive table game for the Taku Tāmaki – Auckland Stories Exhibition.

3Design modeled over eighty pieces for The Collect and Connect game which is an example of a physical-digital museum experience at the leading edge of creative technologies. It cleverly brings together a combination of approaches in infrared camera tracking and multi-touch screen hardware, 3D printed and printed solutions, data driven and client-managed content, and a modern games engine development platform.

Collect & Connect
 Multi-User Interactive Table

Concept, design, and production of a multi-user interactive table game for the Taku Tāmaki – Auckland Stories Exhibition.

We worked closely with the Auckland War Memorial Museum team to develop a multi-user, physical-digital interactive experience for a 9 to 12 year old target audience.

The final solution is a treasure hunt-like game where visitors are tasked with being ‘curators’ to hunt down objects related to a particular topic. Through use of written clues, colour coding and iconography, visitors move around the table using their own physical game piece as their main interaction. This piece takes the form of an abstract Sherlock Holmes-like, 3D printed model. The models have tracking markers on their undersides which get tracked via infrared cameras mounted in the table screen hardware. User interface displays and abstract styled game graphics react with these models as the visitor moves around the table utilising a front-facing radar scope to see otherwise hidden moving objects. Additionally, visitors can use a separate set of physical museum ‘department’ models to help them find the object they are after.

The overall premise of the game is to find the correct set of objects as fast as you can to get a daily time rank. However, the endpoint of each game enables the visitor to interact with the objects they have collected. Each object is an actual record of something held within the museum’s digital collection, so there is an associated image and written description.

While the game is an abstract, fun, and collaborative free-for-all, conceptually the underlying theme introduces visitors to the way museums collect, curate, and view data.

The Collect and Connect game is an example of a physical-digital museum experience at the leading edge of creative technologies. It cleverly brings together a combination of approaches in infrared camera tracking and multi-touch screen hardware, 3D printed and printed solutions, data driven and client-managed content, and a modern games engine development platform.

3Design and Simplify3D

3Design New Zealand are now selling licences of Simplify 3D the next generation of 3Dprinting software. Simplify 3D offer a hassle-free printing experience with No need to patch together multiple software applications! One powerful application allows you to import, manipulate, repair, slice, preview, and start printing a 3D model in a matter of minutes.

http://3dinnovation.co.nz/3d-printing-courses/simplify3d-software/

Here at 3Design we've spent hundreds of hours testing every available slicing software. Each one of them seems to be good in some areas and lacking in others. The result, we found, is often a workflow that involves several pieces of software and a number of manual steps before a model is ready to 3D print. Simplify3D gives you everything you need to go from STL (or OBJ) file to a flawless 3D print.

Simplify3D Software contains everything you need to begin making parts on your new 3D printer. Import and manipulate geometry, repair models, generate G-Code instructions, verify toolpaths, manually control your machine, and print parts all from the same program!

THE EXPERTS AGREE: SOFTWARE MATTERS

It translates 3D models into instructions your printer understands. Better instructions mean better prints, so a simple software upgrade makes all the difference in the world. In fact, more than 90% of experts agree that 3D printing software has the greatest impact on print quality, even more so than the 3D printer itself!
