3Design and flightless Collect & Connect


Late last year 3Design had the privilege of working with a an awsome company called Flightless.Flightless is a boutique design and independent games development studio for a Concept, design, and production of a multi-user interactive table game for the Taku Tāmaki – Auckland Stories Exhibition.

3Design modeled over eighty pieces for The Collect and Connect game which is an example of a physical-digital museum experience at the leading edge of creative technologies. It cleverly brings together a combination of approaches in infrared camera tracking and multi-touch screen hardware, 3D printed and printed solutions, data driven and client-managed content, and a modern games engine development platform.

Concept, design, and production of a multi-user interactive table game for the Taku Tāmaki – Auckland Stories Exhibition.

We worked closely with the Auckland War Memorial Museum team to develop a multi-user, physical-digital interactive experience for a 9 to 12 year old target audience.

The final solution is a treasure hunt-like game where visitors are tasked with being ‘curators’ to hunt down objects related to a particular topic. Through use of written clues, colour coding and iconography, visitors move around the table using their own physical game piece as their main interaction. This piece takes the form of an abstract Sherlock Holmes-like, 3D printed model. The models have tracking markers on their undersides which get tracked via infrared cameras mounted in the table screen hardware. User interface displays and abstract styled game graphics react with these models as the visitor moves around the table utilising a front-facing radar scope to see otherwise hidden moving objects. Additionally, visitors can use a separate set of physical museum ‘department’ models to help them find the object they are after.



The overall premise of the game is to find the correct set of objects as fast as you can to get a daily time rank. However, the endpoint of each game enables the visitor to interact with the objects they have collected. Each object is an actual record of something held within the museum’s digital collection, so there is an associated image and written description.

While the game is an abstract, fun, and collaborative free-for-all, conceptually the underlying theme introduces visitors to the way museums collect, curate, and view data.

3design on Twitter



Hello Readers




Twitter what an awesome tool for promoting your business I'm just learning about all this type of stuff but it's something that has a lot of depth and doesn't have to be to time consuming. I do all the the social media marketing for our company 3design, it's good fun but I think I'm getting addicted to it lol, There is so much to learn and I'm just scratching the surface, twitter is a great way to connect to people who have the same interests for us its 3dprinting, we love it! There are millions of like minded people out there who have a common interest so why not connect and share information? Hush tags are important so I've heard writing blogs generate organic traffic which can convert into leads. 3Design Nz have set out to become the leaders in 3d Printing in New Zealand so we have a long adventure ahead of us which is exciting, Twitter will help us get there I know this, so if there's anyone out who can help us give us advice comment below we appropriate it.

Rapid 3D prototyping


Rapid 3D prototyping in New Zealand is becoming a viable option for many prototyping applications.There are a multitude of materials and methods for achieving great aesthetic results and dimensionally accurate models. 3Design offers a full array of methods and materials for your 3Dprinting needs.

FDM (Fused deposit modelling)

FDM is an additives' manufacturing process where plastic filament is heated and extruded through a nozzle. This extruded plastic is precisely placed layer upon layer to create a 3 dimensional model. With a large amount of  materials available such as ABS, PLA, polycarbonate, polyamides, polystyrene, lignin, among many others, there are different trade-offs between strength and temperature properties.
Prototyping with materials like PLA can be used for lost-wax (investment) castings. Reducing mould manufacturing time by creating accurate models with the tree assembly in one process, removing the need to create individual art moulds getting your product to the market quicker with reduced cost. PLA is rigid and aesthetically smooth making it great for small end parts and prototype components that must not flex.
ABS plastic has great strength and flexibility for creating working prototypes. It has good impact strength and is dimensionally very accurate.

Robert Reid - Managing Director has responsibilities as a director, decision maker, leader, manager and executor. The communicator role can involve the press and the rest of the outside world, as well as the organization's management and employees; the decision-making role involves high-level decisions about policy and strategy. As a leader of the company, advises the board of directors, motivates employees, and drives change within the organization.
Robert’s experience lies mainly in sales, marketing and business development. He has been in business for six years and previously held a position as a sales manager. Building online sales platforms is where Robert’s passion lies and he also specializes in creating brands and sourcing quality products to take to the market. He enjoys getting involved with his creative team, strategizing and coming up with new and innovative customer service solutions.
3Design’s mission from the start has always been to create the best buying experience for our customers. We pride ourselves on providing the highest level of after sales support and technical advice. Chad Vorwerk - Technical Director is responsible for the successful creation and delivery of the company's product to the marketplace by managing technical risks and opportunities; making key software design and implementation decisions with the development teams, scheduling of tasks including tracking dependencies, managing change requests, and guaranteeing quality of deliveries and educating the team on technical best practices.
Having studied mechanical engineering at A.U.T. University Chad embarked on a 12 year journey gaining experience in design manufacture of heavy fabrication machinery. He acquired skills in AutoCAD and Inventor by providing high detail fabrication drawings and manufacturing solutions. This experience has aided his growth and drive for 3D printing and modelling. Chad is passionate about product design and development and is always finding the right solutions for our customers.
At 3Design we immediately recognised the necessity for growing not only the products available but the knowledge and education required for an industry we want to see thrive. We live and breathe every aspect of 3D printing and design.

Stu Davies - 3D Printing Specialist develop primary sketches and models for final selection of product designs and review 3D designs and provide recommendations. Select materials, engineering standards, and generic parts for 3D product designs and present designs to clients and internal teams clearly.
Stu has been in the 3D printing industry for over 8 years. He’s been involved in numerous projects in a variety of disciplines including architecture, satellite imaging, oil and gas, engineering, product design, industrial design, medical, arts and education.
With this array of knowledge, he’s been able to acquire a range of skill sets from consultation to CAD modelling to production runs that give his clientele a complete package. 
Originally from Canada, Stu has settled in New Zealand to promote the 3D printing explosion.

Harley Wise - 3D Printing Assistant maintains 3D printing operations by receiving and distributing communications, maintaining supplies and equipment, picking-up and delivering items. Additional responsibilities include coordinating the submission of proposals, planning meetings, tracking sales progress and troubleshooting minor technical problems.
Harley has been part of Robert’s team for over two years, working within multiple different web based businesses with 3Design being the latest. He is new to the 3D printing and design industry, but is quickly learning the ropes. His main roles are running and servicing printers, looking after the website, processing, packaging and sending orders and customer service.
His passions lie within the artistic realm but he is not afraid to get stuck in to any task.

Devin George - Technical Engineer has responsibilities build or set up equipment, conduct experiments, and collect data and calculate results, work in quality control, where check products, do tests, and collect data. Also responsible for designing, testing, and repairing a wide variety of electronics, computers and 3D printers.
Devin is a resourceful, motivated and experienced ICT Computer Support Technician with over nine years of experience in the industry. He helps with maintaining, troubleshooting and updating the 3Design website.
Originally from India, Devin has been in New Zealand for almost two years and worked for almost a year sharing his knowledge within the IT and Electronics field.
Devin also plays a big part in the maintenance, servicing and upgrading of our 3D printers alongside Chad and Harley. He has a vast array of technical and electrical knowledge which is a big asset to the 3Design team.
